The anesthesia is carried out by means of strong, numbing drops or a syringe under the eye. In rare cases general anesthesia is necessary. As part of the operation, the very own cloudy and hard lens (= cataract) is removed via very small incisions of the cornea (0.2 to 2.2 mm). Subsequently, a folded artificial lens is used. This remains in the eye and sticks by itself in the place where the own lens sat. The very next day, most patients have excellent vision. On this day, the first inspection should take place.
How long is the average hospital stay?
The cataract surgery takes about ten minutes per eye. The cataract operations at the Ophthalmic Clinic Graz are carried out by day surgery, and you do not spend the night in the hospital.
How long does the healing take?
Already the day after the operation you can see much clearer. Even if the wounds are tight without sutures right after the operation, you should avoid physical exertion for two to three weeks. After eight weeks, the artificial lens in the eye has solidified.
What do I have to consider after the cataract operation?
After cataract surgery, drops and ointments should be used regularly; It is recommended to wear a protective shell at night. Caution is advised when the eye and / or eyelids suddenly become red after surgery, swell, cause pain, and vision loss occurs. In these cases, an ophthalmologist should be consulted immediately to prevent or treat inflammation. For the first two to three weeks, the following is prohibited:

Reading and watching is allowed, as well as lifting up to five kilograms. The therapy should be continued as prescribed. The eye bandage that is created after the operation should be left until the next day. For the first week, it is recommended to wear an eye shield at night. The day after the operation, the eye must be checked by an ophthalmologist.
