Feuchte Makuladegeneration
This outpatient procedure is performed up to 10,000 times a year at the Eye Clinic Graz. Most often, a vascular growth inhibiting substance (Anit-VEGF) or cortisone is administered. Typical diseases in which this therapy is used are: wet macular degeneration, diabetic maculopathies, arterial and venous occlusions, and retinopathy of prematurity. In this procedure, just behind the cornea (visible clear part of the eye) the drug is introduced into the eye by means of a very small needle.
How long is the average hospital stay?
It is a painless, only five-minute and very safe procedure. The procedure takes place on an outpatient basis at the Eye Clinic Graz. You should plan about a four-hour stay.
How long does the healing take?
The puncture is self-closing. It may be that for a few hours you notice the drug as a cloud in the eye. For the day after the operation, heavy physical activities should be avoided. Rarely, bleeding of the conjunctiva can occur on the outside of the eye. This is harmless and dissolves of itself.
What do I have to consider after the operation?
Postoperative therapy the next day is not necessary. But a check-up with the ophthalmologist should be done three to four days after the injection. If severe pain, vision deterioration or swelling of the eyelid should occur after the operation, immediately check with an ophthalmologist.
